Competitions
and Clubs
It's the beginning
of
the 07-08 school year and many of the available competitions and clubs
are in need of volunteer coordinators to get started in the right
direction. Whether you're a veteran at the subject, or just have a
student who is interested in participating, please consider
volunteering to lead one of the listed teams/groups. HSHS depends on
parents and leaders working together to make these awesome
opportunities possible each year! Also, if you know of a club or
competition that isn't listed here, please let us know so we
can include it in the list! All clubs/groups are for high school
students unless otherwise specified.

Students who participate in high school debate receive tremendous
academic and problem solving benefits. Debate teaches critical
thinking, research, writing skills, persuasive communication, and the
ability to see both sides of important issues. It also fosters
leadership, citizenship, and self-confidence. Many debate students go
on to success at prestigious post-secondary institutions, successful
careers, and a life of positive contributions to their community, their
state, and their nation!
Envirothon
VOLUNTEER/TEAM
COORDINATOR NEEDED
The Nebraska Envirothon is a competition designed
for high school students (9-12th grades) to test their knowledge about
the environment. Five-member teams compete in the spring on the
regional level in seven areas of environmental studies: soil, aquatics,
forestry, policy, wildlife, range and a current environmental issue.
For the state competition, an oral presentation, on a topic selected by
the Canon Envirothon Committee, is added to the testing stations. Why
take the time to organize and coach a team for this competition? More
and more careers are being created that deal with the environment. This
is an excellent opportunity to give your students some additional
background
in the environment and exposure to environmental careers. Visit the Nebraska Envirothon
website for more information, including a study guide.

The National
Engineers Week Future City Competition is a program developed for seventh and eighth grade students to
help them discover and foster interests in math, science and
engineering. As you'll soon discover, it's a program that's both
challenging and stimulating for everyone involved. Future
City will give students an introduction to different types of
engineering, from civil to electrical, chemical to mechanical. It will
also teach them skills such as writing, public speaking, teamwork, time
management, problem solving and new computer skills. Above all, they'll
find it fun since it allows them to use their imaginations. There's a
benefit to team leaders, as the competition will cover many of the
fundamental math, science and technology skills that your students will
need to learn at these grade levels. Visit the Future City website for
more information!

VOLUNTEER/TEAM
COORDINATOR NEEDED
GNSEF is a regional science and engineering fair that includes much of
the eastern portion of Nebraska, bounded on the east by the Missouri
River and on the west by Clay county. Anyone in grades 6-12 attending
school in this region is eligible to compete. Students do not need
to enter another fair before coming to GNSEF, however this is a
regional event and students are expected to prepare projects that
require appropriate challenge. The next GNSEF will be
held March 28-30, 2008 in Nebraska
City, at the Nebraska City
High School. GNSEF chooses two winners of all-expense paid trips to
compete in the INTEL
International Science and Engineering Fair each year. All
applications are due March 1st 2008 and minimal effort projects are not
accepted (no volcanos, potato light bulbs, or other simple projects).
Entrance fee is $15 - $18 and will be announced closer to Christmas.
Visit the GNSEF website for online
resources and additional information.
Mock Trial
VOLUNTEER/TEAM
COORDINATOR NEEDED
Nebraska High School Mock Trial is a time-honored
tradition, operating since 1982. It is sponsored and administered by
the Nebraska State Bar Foundation and its State Center for Law-Related
Education. Each year, the Nebraska championship team goes on to compete
at the national level. In 1984, Nebraska was the winner of the regional
championship. In 2001, the Bar Foundation hosted the National High
School Mock Trial Championship in Omaha with over 1,000 students,
teachers, attorneys, and guests in attendance. The Nebraska High School
Mock Trial Project provides a positive academic competition that gives
students an opportunity to improve knowledge about the legal and
judicial systems, speaking skills, analytical skills, reading and
writing skills. For more information visit the Nebraska Mock
Trials information sheet (Adobe PDF file) or the Nebraska Mock Trial
website.

Model United Nations

Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and
other multilateral bodies. In Model UN, students in teams of 3+ step
into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current
issues on the agenda. While playing their roles as ambassadors, student
delegates make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with
allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN
conference rules of procedure - all in the interest of resolving
problems that affect countries all over the world. Before playing out
their ambassadorial roles in a Model UN simulation, students research
the issue that their committee will address. Model UN participants
learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics
including peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and
hunger, economic development and globalization. Model UN delegates also
look closely at the needs, goals and foreign policies of the countries
they will represent at the event. The insights they gain from their
exploration of history, geography, culture, economics and science
contribute to the authenticity of the simulation when the role playing
gets under way. The delegates' in-depth knowledge of their
countries guarantees a lively and memorable experience. Visit the Model UN website for more information.

COORDINATOR NEEDED
Do you want to look inside an atom, visualize the
sound of a trumpet, or gaze on a supernova? Do you want to design
a rocket engine that sends people into outer space or program a
computer to simulate life? These are just a few of the
things a physics major might do. Physics Olympics is
an opportunity to motivate students and
see how learning about science is actually tons of hands on fun. By applying physics
knowledge to problem solving, students will learn how to work
together in a team to achieve objectives in a format structured to get
maximum results with a minimum burden on team leaders. The competition
is held at Doane College's campus each spring, visit their website
for more information.

The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a mid-level
robotics competition for high-school students. It offers the
traditional challenge of a FIRST competition but with a more accessible
and affordable robotics kit. The FIRST Tech Challenge grew out of the
existing FIRST Robotics Competition and the FIRST Robovation
platform. FIRST, RadioShack, and Innovation First, Inc.
collaborated to develop an improved version of the FIRST Robovation
kit. The new kit is significantly upgraded and is called the Vex
Robotics Design System. FIRST piloted the competition for two
years under the name 'FIRST Vex Challenge' until it was approved as an
official program for the 2007 season.
The ultimate goal of FTC is to reach young people with an opportunity
to discover the excitement and rewards of science, technology, and
engineering. Visit their
website for more information!

Hawes (remove NOSPAM before sending)
Crew 26 is a high adventure Crew, and our Super Activity this summer
will be a special leadership skills course called "Kodiak," while we're
camping and backpacking in the Colorado Rockies. We have youth
involved with living history, music, and sports as well. Venturing is a
totally different program for the high school and early college aged
youth. Venturing
coordinator Rich Hawes is always excited for all corners of the
Homeschool High School community to be aware of the possibilities that
Venturing may offer, no matter what the group or activity.
Venturing is not just high adventure, which this Crew is currently
focused on, but has program methods that can be applied to sports,
arts, and hobbies in ways that can grow and support a program for our
young peoples development in many different ways. Venturing is really
such a flexible program, including arts and hobbies, sports, religious
ministries, and outdoor high adventure, that a group is really what
people want to make it. Have a sports team? Form a Sports
Crew. Doing computers and robots? Form a Hobby Crew.
Want to form a theater group and literally take your show on the
road? Form an Arts Crew! Have a church youth group doing
hurricane relief or building a house in Mexico? Form a Religious
Ministries Crew! The possibilities are ENDLESS! Mr Hawes even
heard once of a Crew of all girls and moms that is a shopping Crew -
their annual Super Activity is a trip to New York! Contact Rich Hawes
(remove NOSPAM before sending) for more information about participating
in Venturing today!
